Maintenance and sustainability go hand in hand. At its core, maintenance is about sustaining the world around us by keeping things running safely and efficiently. But the full impact of this work isn’t getting measured properly and often goes unrecognized.

At Fiix we’ve been working with Ryerson University in Toronto to quantify the social, environmental, and economic impact of good maintenance and the findings so far confirm what we already know: maintenance improves health & safety outcomes, it reduces waste and saves energy, and it cuts down on costs.

The positive impacts are widespread, so we categorized them into 10 unique key performance indicators across the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.

They include health & safety, quality of workplace, community, air, waste, energy, water, cost, utilization, and compliance. These indicators can be further broken down to include the sub-indicators italicized below.

This framework is meant to guide your maintenance strategy to include all measures of success in order to effectively integrate sustainability.

Do you think we’ve captured all the ways in which you are impacting sustainability? What examples of sustainability do you see in your day to day work?
